Apocalyptic Planet Excerpt: Tibet

Our purpose here was to navigate a stretch of river no one had yet attempted. Running off the steep northeast edge of the Tibetan Plateau, the Salween is one of the larger rivers to flow through Southeast Asia, and it was flooding. The last of its un-run stretches were being knocked off by rafters and kayakers every season, and within a few years these wild headwaters will be another known river. The summer had been warmer than usual. The plateau held the heat, and the heat pulled moisture from all around so that the monsoon lingered later than it should have. Whether we could do this depended on the rain.
