Walking on sand
Shortly after setting across these dunes, you find that boots are unbearably clumsy, like wearing cinder blocks, dredging them up with every step. Barefoot has proven far more fruitful. You can actually feel your way along, testing for flour sand and subtle hardpans. Weeks without boots or socks, feet marching through cold, hot, soft, hard sand is truly a delicacy when you've spent a lifetime cooped up in footwear. Yes, sole skin burns easily, and toes begin crabbing outward to grab footing. But it is far better than clomping across the dunes in leather boots like a sweaty Frankenstein.
